6 Common Mistakes to Avoid While Hiring During a Recession

In a recession, hiring mistakes are amplified and can be the difference between a long tenure as an exec or a very short tenure. Here are some common IT hiring mistakes:

-Avoid outsourcing critical tasks that are time sensitive: Indian outsourcing is a great way to cut costs. However only outsource non-critical roles or responsibilities that don’t have pressing deadlines. Expect communication breakdown and delays to happen.

-Avoid rushing the hiring process like 2022: The market has changed and great hiring is critical. You have to be sure that any member added to the team is at least a 9 out of 10. Have your team take time to evaluate. A good, competitive benchmark is 1-1.5 weeks time to offer with 2-3 rounds of interviews.

-Avoid solely relying on FTE if there are variable needs: If business needs are quickly changing, contract work is a cost-effective way to scale up or scale down appropriately.

-Avoid allowing your team to hire candidates that need a lot of training: anyone added to the team should at a bare minimum be an 8 out of 10. No team can afford to hire a liability during a slow economic period. Deadlines will be missed. Morale will be crushed. Low standards will be the new norm.

-Avoid understaffing: there will be continuous pressure to deliver on initiatives with less manpower. Don’t allow other departments outside of IT to command all the budget. It’s critical to fight to have ample resources to deliver on commitments.

-Avoid relying solely on your internal recruiting team: have your own personal vendor relationships ready to immediately aid you when necessary. Internal talent acquisitions are not always equipped for super technical hiring nor do they have the bandwidth to staff your projects quickly. The best leaders use a mix of outside vendors and internal teams to address their needs efficiently.
